This year, a group of our senior pupils had the fantastic opportunity to participate in the SuperGEMS Project, delivered by GEMX in collaboration with McColgan's.
As part of the project, our pupils visited the McColgan's factory, where they gained a valuable insight into the wide range of careers and opportunities available within a successful local business. During their visit, they explored the Packing, Production and Administration departments, meeting staff and learning about the important roles that help keep the business running each day.
The experience provided our young adults with invaluable careers education and employability learning opportunities, helping them to develop confidence, independence and a greater understanding of the world of work. The project also promoted inclusion, citizenship and aspirations for the future, demonstrating that meaningful employment opportunities are achievable for everyone.
The SuperGEMS journey culminated in a prestigious celebration event at the University of Ulster, Magee, where pupils attended alongside family members and school staff. The event was presided over by Mayor Councillor Ruairí McHugh and celebrated the achievements of young people from across the region who had participated in the programme. It was a proud occasion for our pupils and their families, recognising their hard work, commitment and personal growth throughout the year.
Most importantly, the project has already had a real and lasting impact. As a direct result of his involvement in SuperGEMS, one of our pupils applied for a position with McColgan's and we are absolutely delighted to announce that he has been successful in securing a role with the company!
