Makaton Friendly Award

14th Jan 2020

Knockavoe School are Makaton Friendly

Knockavoe School recently received the Makaton Friendly Award in recognition of our efforts to ensure that people who use Makaton feel welcome and able to use our services.

Makaton is a derivative of British Sign Language. Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression and is used with pupils throughout our school.

Using Makaton also encourages the use of speech and the use of Makaton gives our pupils another method of communication within the school environment. We aim to promote the use of Makton within the local and wider community in the coming months.

Our music co-ordinator at Knockavoe School has incorporated the use of Makaton with our school choir to enhance musical performances for all. We have performed numerous songs with Makaton; our most recent was in the Alley Theatre in Dec; As part of the ‘International Celebration of Young People with Disabilities Festival, our school choir performed with the Strabane Brass Band signing and singing “Walking in the air”

Joe Gallagher Entertainment has invited our School Choir to perform at the Mount Errigal Hotel Letterkenny on Friday 7th February with the renowned ‘ARRIVAL’ from Sweden in their performance of ‘The music of ABBA’. Knockavoe School choir will be showcasing their use of Makaton and performance ability among a wonderful audience and international stars!

We are thrilled and delighted to be performing with ARRIVAL in ‘the best and most authentic ABBA show there is’. We look forward to seeing you all there.
