Transitions Event for 14+
6th Nov 2025
On Wednesday 5th November, we hosted an information session for parents of pupils aged 14+.
At Knockavoe, we recognise and appreciate how important transitions are in the lives of our pupils and their families.
When a student reaches 14 years of age, as part of their annual review process, a transition plan is drawn up and reviewed on a yearly basis with support and input from parents, social workers, transition officer, career's advisors and other relevant professionals. The aim of this is to put the plans in place to best support the family in making the choice of placement for the child when they leave Knockavoe school.
In attendance at the event yesterday were Roisin Kielty - EA Transitions Officer, WHSCT Representatives Sandra Milligan and Janet Stewart, from the Adult Learning Disability Services team, and Alison McMenamin, from the Careers Service NI.
They outlined their roles and responsibilities and shared valuable information regarding the transition options. These teams are the experts who will be supporting parents and pupils, in preparation for the transtition process for their leaving school at 19. At Knockavoe, we value the open and continued collaboration and remain committed to supporting the transition process - so much so that it features as part of our School Development Plan!
Please find attached leaflets from both the Adult Learning Disability Services team and the EA Transitions Team, including contact information and advice for referrals.
Several parents raised questions re: funding, eligibility of support etc.
We have attached the number for Make the Call - a helpline which can discuss benefits and support entitlement, on a case by case basis.
